Battery Capacity Requirements
Amp hours or milliamp hours represent the rating system for cell capacity (C). A discharge rate is often also proportional to C. Below are a few helpful examples:
- 5 Ahr (Amp hour) battery is equal to a 5,000 milliamp hour battery
- To discharge within 10 hours, a current of 5/10 or .5 amps is required.
- To discharge within 50 hours, a current of 100 milliamps is required.
- Discharge rate of C/5 equals C/(5 hours), or the constant current to fully discharge the battery within 5 hours.
How much voltage is enough? How many cells should be in the series? The answers depend on the cell’s stage of charge, which ranges from fully charged, to fully discharged, and includes minimum charging voltage. The client’s product must be able to tolerate the battery pack’s voltage range.
